Inspiration

Inspiration

I have had cause of late to examine where my inspiration comes from.

I have had the extreme good fortune of seeing both the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans.

I have snorkeled the South China Sea and walked more sand beaches than I can name.

I have surfed waves, held octopi, played with clown fish, and bumped noses with barracuda.

I have walked in tropical rain forests, camped in the desert, stood high in the mountains and canoed miles of rivers both serene and wild.

I have ridden horses, Harleys, and hay racks, flown in jets, sailed in ships, taken trolleys, trams, and trains.

I have played in the sun, walked in the rain, rolled in the snow, daydreamed in moonlight, sung songs by firelight, and enjoyed dinner by candlelight.

I have assisted in the delivery of newborn calves and lambs, and saved a life or two.

I have read hundreds of books, made hundreds of friends, and enemies, maybe a few.

I have tasted the bittersweet of friends loved and lost.

I stood by my wife during the delivery of our children.  I have laughed and cried over every one of them, and have lived long enough to experience the joys of assisting in the nurturing of my grandchildren.

Flowers, tears, smiles, birds, fall colors, the list could go on and on.

I have been blessed beyond measure in life’s experiences, and expect to have many more.

The Bible says that he who receives much, of him much shall be required. I have to admit that my output does not match the input.

The truth though, is that inspiration may not come from input.  In my life there has been a lot of input, more than I could begin to itemize, but I recognize that the ability to take a pile of ingredients and turn them into wholesome and aromatic bread is the gift of the Baker.

I believe that taking a lifetime of experiences and creating a Song, is a gift of the Maker.

I believe that the process has far less to do with me than with Him, and the flaws in my work do not reflect any flaws in the Maker, but the flaws in my ability to conform to His will. Such is the nature of fallen man.

I look forward to the day when I stand before him perfected; When the Song of my life has no flaw and my soul has no scar. When I can sing the song of the redeemed and praise the One who has made it possible: Now that is inspirational.
